It was as if persons unknown but of wicked intent had noted Goulding's regular protestations of ordinariness in interviews – "I'm quite normal," she kept saying to the Observer's Paul Morley recently – and decided to offer her a cautionary glimpse into the future. The 23-year-old looked a little discombobulated, which frankly seemed to speak volumes about her immense cool-headedness and self-control: a lesser woman would have taken one look at the company she now appeared to be keeping, dropped her Brit like a hot brick and scrambled over the nearest wall, back to the relative sanity of the Welsh Marches. Whisked backstage after the presentation to be interviewed before ITV's cameras, she stood sandwiched between Halliwell and Courtney Love, while Fearne Cotton bellowed at her.

There was courageous Samantha Fox proclaiming that she was "going to get it right tonight", then announcing the award for the "most rememorable performance of the last 30 years". What do you think of Ellie's new album "Lights?" What's your favorite song? We're obsessing over "Wish I Stayed.I t may not have been a vintage year for music, but if nothing else, the 2010 Brits offered a bumper harvest of pathos. It's fun, and it's better than meeting fans in weird, awkward circumstances. It sounds very nerdy and un-rock-n-roll, but I like it. And then I started to run with my fans in certain cities. Is that true?ĮG: Well, on tour I eat terribly, so I balance that by running a lot. But we've actually heard that you run with your fans when you're on the road. But I just hope it keeps going and that I can build up a fan base over here.ĬG: Being on the road must be amazing. It's insane and really overwhelming, actually. Knowing that I have a fan base in all of these cities is incredible! I can't believe that there are people who know every single word. There was music in every single venue, which was really bizarre but amazing. We started off at SXSW which was a bit mental. It's just about having an obsession with someone.ĬG: Describe what this US tour has been like for you?ĮG: It was all kind of a big shock to me.
It's the one that I enjoy the most live as well. Unfortunately, I can't play, which is really frustrating, but I've been experimenting with different notes that sound interesting.ĬG: Do you have a favorite song on the album?ĮG: I think "Animal" is probably my favorite. I guess I'm just quite observant and I pay attention to a lot of things.
I added several songs to the album Bright Lights in the UK that I think really showcase who I am as a songwriter now. But I feel like all of my newer stuff shows how I've grown up over the years. Most of those are songs that I wrote about missing home and my family, and then there are some about my past crushes or having an early infactuations with someone. She played her hit UK album Lights in its entirety, adding three new songs to her energetic set for her US fans-including her stripped-down, acoustic cover of Elton John's "Your Song." And between strumming on her guitar, dancing around stage and repeatedly telling the screaming crowd "Thank you so much," Ellie also showed off her amazing drumming skills on songs, "Under the Sheets" and "Starry Eyes."Īfter the show we caught up with the folktronica singer to talk music, fans, and staying in shape on tour!ĬG: Where do you find inspiration for your songs?ĮG: There are songs on this album that I wrote when I was 15 years old. We were lucky enough to see Ellie live at Webster Hall in New York City, and she didn't disappoint! The bleached blonde singer came out like a rockstar, in ripped black tights, black jean shorts and a black mesh top. The US version of her album Lights came out earlier this month on March 8, and if you don't have it, well, what are you waiting for?
